Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck, was born on August 1, 1744, in Bazantin, France.
His aristocratic family intended for him a priestly career, but at age 16, Lamarck left the Jesuit college and enlisted in the military. He served with distinction, rising to the rank of officer.
